About the author
David Calcano is the creative director of the Fantoons Studio based In Los Angeles. He works with world renowned rock bands developing cutting edge animation, books, documentaries and original stories. Fantoons animated shorts have won awards in film festivals around the globe.
Fantoons clients include: RUSH, Frank Zappa, Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, Ninja Sex Party, Motörhead, and Simón Díaz amongst others. Fantoons also works with Disney Channel, for whom they created a series to promote healthy habits with original quirky characters through mini-musicals that include blues, hip-hop and punk rock.
In addition to animation, Fantoons also works with musicians to publish high quality graphic novels and art books based on the bands. David recently signed a distribution deal with Simon & Schuster that will put Fantoons’ books on retailers’ shelves worldwide. Titles include RUSH: The Making of a Farewell to Kings, Motörhead: Where is Lemmy?, Life Behind the Score: Henry Mancini – The Graphic Novel, Tío Simón ABC: A Bilingual Children’s Book and many more! David has written and supervised as art director on all of Fantoons’ books.
Fantoons’ first book was a 180-page cartoon book about the band RUSH, that David successfully funded on Kickstarter to publish in 2016. Thanks in part to the book’s success, Fantoons became an official licensee of the band, helping launch the rest of Fantoons’ publishing arm, and creating officially licensed art prints, coloring books, comic books, cereal boxes and many other merchandise items. Fantoons also worked with RUSH to develop an animated series of cartoon documentaries about the band’s history. The first episode debuted in cinemas in late 2016.
In 2019 David did all the art direction of the definitive Brian Wilson documentary, as well as, directed almost half of the animation shown in the new cutting edge Frank Zappa holographic touring show, The Bizarre World of Frank Zappa.
David developed and directed all of Mr. Big’s visuals for their 2014 Japanese tour, including sold out shows at the majestic Tokyo Budokan. Instead of an opening band, the concerts started with a Fantoons short that David directed, which received rave reviews, captivating the demanding eyes of the Japanese fans. The short was featured in the industry leading animation blog: Cartoon Brew.
David has many projects in development, including an animated series that tell stories of rock ’n’ roll in unique way, narrated by the artists themselves and brought to life with the endless canvas of animation and his roster of top notch artists.
David was born in Caracas, Venezuela and has been watching Disney, Warner, and UPA cartoons ever since he was inside his mom’s belly. As an adult, he moved to the UK where he worked as a systems engineer—at least until he went nuts and dropped his career to pursue his dream: to build an animation and art studio, which evokes the cartoons and music that he loves so passionately. In addition to working in the Fantoons studio in Burbank, CA, you will find David and Fantoons at comic conventions worldwide exhibiting both his animated work as well as his books.

This book is one of the best reads I've had in a while, and of course a lot of that comes from how much I like the band and the people behind it. But putting that aside, this book/graphic novel really has a level of detail in it that you have to admire.
The book is split into two parts, you read it from one side and then flip it over to get the other part. Each side tells you the story of either band member. It goes from their childhood all the way through their time in highschool, up to the moment they meet after college.
Although this book isn't that long, and you're really reading half a book twice, this is a work of love and it tells stories that some dedicated fans already know. But even if you know the stories overall, this telling definitely gives a much better idea of how the two came to be the people they are today. You get these stories told through the beautiful artwork of Fantoons Studio with great humor from all of the writers and editors involved. You can tell that Dan and Brian wrote this book, I'm sure the editor's main job was telling Dan that the word "Committee" wasn't spelled "Comet-tee" and that they weren't going to illustrate a shirt falling out of the sky through the atmosphere for a punchline.
But in all seriousness, if you like this band at all and you want to support them, this book is a fantastic read and it'll give you insight, humor, wit, and beautiful illustrations. Plus, you get to keep a book that has giant bolden text saying, "NINJA SEX PARTY" on your bookself. If you're not interested in doing that, I have no idea why you're reading this review.
Thanks to Dan, Brian, David, Lindsay and all the other amazing people who worked on this book -- I cannot tell you how excited I am for part two (coming soon?).

A unique detail about this book in particular is that the two stories start from each end of the book and meet in the middle, you simply flip it to read the other story. They're both very inspiring for someone who isn't quite sure where they ultimately fit in within the world.
I've been a Ninja Sex Party fan for a few years now and have seen them live thanks to a dear friend of mine. Following Dan and Brian across the internet, I've come to see them as such genuine people and this graphic novel does a heartwarming job at expressing who they are and where they come from. A lot of care was put into this book and I'll absolutely be ready to pick up the next one.
Do you like Dan and Brian?
Do you want to learn more about Dan and and Brian?

Absolutely awesome!
Now on the book itself. As noted this book has two sides, one Danny the other Brian. Is was unsure how this would work but the meeting in the middle is done perfectly. The “stories” are very different and I think many people will be able to relate to parts in each. I’m not a rock star but do play music and after reading this I can see how much work and dedication NSP have put in to the band and become the success they are today. There were moments I found really funny (the X files moment) and other bits where the (oh cheesy line incoming) the power of friendship can really help us get through some hard times.
I don’t want to ruin the story in any way as if you’re reading this then I guess you know who NSP are so I’ll leave the fun up to you.
To sum things up
I LOVE THIS BOOK.
