Remich, the Pearl of the Moselle

Located in the south-east of the country, the town of Remich is nicknamed "the Pearl of the Moselle". It is the smallest municipality in the Grand Duchy and stands out for its dynamism and its many assets. Over the years, it has become a first-class tourist and sports destination.

Bordered by Germany and only a few kilometres from France, Remich benefits from an ideal location at the crossroads of these three countries. Surrounded by the Moselle, its hills and vineyards, Remich offers a complete change of scenery only twenty kilometres from the capital.

A changing population

With an area of only 5.29km2Remich has about 3,600 inhabitants. This makes it one of the most densely populated municipalities in the Grand Duchy. The town, which has a majority of Luxembourgers (53%), is tending to diversify. The percentage of foreign residents is gradually increasing. Some fifty nationalities are represented in the area: Portuguese, French, Germans, Belgians and Italians. "The population is slowly but surely growing. There is a turnover in the population. However, it is regrettable that young people do not stay in Remich because of the lack of land for housing development, explains Mayor Henri Kox.

New housing to meet demand

Remich has a number of facilities to cater for its residents: a pre-school, a primary school, two halfway houses, a retirement home and a shopping centre.

Faced with a growing population, the municipality is planning new housing and parking facilities. "We have a new plot of land. It will house a multi-storey car park to allow residents to park when new housing is built, especially in the town centre, where there is a lack of parking space. Faced with a shortage of social housing, the municipality plans to buy several houses for disadvantaged households and refugees.

In order to involve the population in its development, the City of Remich has initiated a housing estate project grouping together more than 110 owners within a cooperative society as part of its " Gewännchen/Juck". Over a 10 to 15 year period, the objective is to create new housing while promoting a greater social mix. With this project, one of the challenges is to fill the housing deficit for young people.

Tourism as a major asset

Thanks to the Moselle River, its forests and vineyards, Remich has become an important tourist destination. Recreational boats are available for tourists, while other cruise ships pass by regularly. Hiking trails are available for nature lovers, while wine lovers can visit the vineyards, cellars and wineries. Remich is also home to the state wine institute.

A new identity

Remich has developed its new visual identity based on its many assets. " We have created a new VisitRemich.lu website based on the Visit Luxembourg model. And our new logo takes up the elements that best symbolise Remich: water, wine and the bridge. Its shape is reminiscent of a bunch of grapes ". The city, together with the municipalities of the Moselle valley, intends to make the wine-tourism concept a main attraction of the region.

A pole of attraction

Remich is also a sports destination par excellence. Many activities are practised here. The esplanade attracts walking and cycling enthusiasts. "This is one of Remich's main assets. We have the Moselle, the promenade, the road and the terraces on the same level. Walks along the Moselle and through the woods and vineyards of Remich invite you to relax and provide access to viewpoints offering a breathtaking view of the Moselle valley. Water skiing and fishing are also practised. Every year Remich organises several events for sportsmen and women such as the ING Route du Vin or the Ironman 70.3 Luxembourg-Moselle. "Our ambition is to organise together with our associations and the tourist office, cultural or sporting events under the name "Sundays in Remich" every weekend between May and September.

The town offers its residents and tourists a wide range of leisure facilities, including several playgrounds, an 18-hole miniature golf course, a children's car track and a heated and renovated outdoor swimming pool.

A BMX and skateboard park will be built on the site of the old ice rink. Henri Kox explains the renewal of Remich by new projects for sports, tourism and leisure facilities. A new sports and leisure complex will complete the town's many assets in a few years' time and will include a synthetic football pitch, an area with 28 pitches for motorhomes (in place of the old football pitch) and playgrounds.

Problematic mobility

Remich can count on many mobility connections. Several bus lines stop here every day. A direct line connecting the city to Kirchberg and Schengen was recently opened. Remich is a victim of its own success due to its geographical location. The car parks in the town, which attracts many tourists, are overrun by people who go to work in Luxembourg City by bus and park their vehicles for the day in the centre. "We had to create the residential parking system in order to free up the centre and allow those visiting Remich to find short and medium-term parking. On the outskirts of Remich, in Nennig and Perl in Germany, there are car parks where border residents can leave their cars and take their respective buses to Luxembourg.

Projects to make the city more dynamic

The city's main asset is its bus station. It is about to be given a new lease of life. "We will extend the ground floor and add a second floor. There will be ticket offices for boat tours, a Rent a Bike counter, a tourist information centre, an area for the sale of local products, especially wine and crémant, and an exhibition area. This project should open its doors in September.

In order to create a more welcoming square, where pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles can live together better, buses will no longer wait around the bus station but at the entrance to the city. "We will also reduce the speed limit in this area to make it more user-friendly and encourage soft mobility.
